THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR LOOK - MARRIN COSTELLO

THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR LOOK

The term 'statement piece' was originally created for accessories whose boldness sparks conversation — a concept that has been held so closely to the heart of the MC brand, that it has made its way permanently into our brand's mission statement. Defined by the legendary V&A Museum as a form of universal adornment, jewelry has been a cultural centerpiece of non-verbal communication for over 100,000 years. Its purpose goes far beyond existence as an accessory, as its influence in everything from beauty to behavior has transformed into a form of global expression.

Despite our modern-day understanding of language, it only accounts for about half of how we communicate— so what do we do with the other half? We look for ways to say who we are without speaking and jewelry has done just that for centuries.

We are proud to produce products that hold so much history at MARRIN COSTELLO INC. We believe that understanding the said history is an opportunity to turn pride into purpose — both as a brand, as well as for our consumers. Born in a time that predates written language, jewelry was functional in use and fundamental in external expression. While early jewelry possessed practical applications for clothing construction, its evolution is deeply embedded in expression. From its initial inception, jewelry has had the ability to communicate feelings and iconography to the outside world without the use of language — a wedding ring, a religious pendant, a crown filled with jewels, etc. As explained by the Institute for International Communication, “jewelry seems to be a powerful communication tool that more or less subtly influences the behavior of the wearer and of those around the adorned person.” These symbols of self-expression have helped to create common cultural understandings throughout civilization, while also carrying forward the heritage and the history of those by whom they were worn.

Not only does jewelry have the power to create connection + communication on an external level but it also has the same effect internally. If how we dress is an extension of what we think or feel, better understanding ourselves is key in effectively communicating our respective individual and personal messages to others. Perhaps choose a bold earring to feel seen, or put on a family heirloom rosary as a token of nostalgia. If the way we choose to express ourselves says so much to others about who we are — what does your jewelry say about you?the ability to communicate feelings and iconography to the outside world without the use of language — a wedding ring, a religious pendant, a crown filled with jewels, etc.
